A rust-orange cross runs vertically through the pale, milky-white centre of this cabochon, its crossbar fading to a softer amber near the edges, framed by a narrow cream-tan rim. This letter agate cabochon comes from the rugged mountains of East Java, where craftsmen first recognised the rough letter agate nodules in a mountain village and began cutting them into religious scripts.
Most notable among them was the man who has become something of a "Godfather" of the Letter Agates. Working in a small dirt-floored cabin lit by gas lantern, using nothing but a hand-crank grinder, this "Letter Man" continues to ply his unique craft. For this piece, the surrounding agate was carefully ground away by hand to reveal the natural cross hidden within. Made entirely from natural materials and free of any treatments, this cabochon is extremely rare and lends a touch of spirituality to any piece of jewelry or craft project.
On a recent trip to Indonesia, we spent a day with Mr "Letterman" himself, a true craftsman who showed us his skill firsthand. It is this one ageing, skilled craftsman who produces every one of our Alphabet, Number and religious figure cabochons, each 100% natural and authentic, guaranteed.
Every alphabet and number set carries his signature for authentication. Capturing the image, whether cross, letter or number, relies entirely on this craftsman's eye. This is a rare chance to own a truly one-of-a-kind piece of lapidary craft.
Whether you make jewelry or collect one-of-a-kind rarities, this cabochon with its cross is a worthy addition to any collection. Bring natural beauty and religious meaning to your next creation with this striking cabochon. See our other listings for complete sets of Alphabets, Numbers and other religious symbols cut from this same unique gemstone.
