A rust-red cross, deepening to maroon along its upper arm, stands out against a cloudy grey-tan patch at the centre of this cabochon, framed by a clear honey-tan border. This Letter Agate cabochon, carved with a natural cross, hails from the rugged mountains of East Java. Craftsmen in a mountain village there first recognised the rough Letter Agate nodules, originally gathering them to carve religious script.
Chief among them is a man regarded as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates, who works his craft in a small dirt-floored cabin lit by gas lantern, using nothing more than a hand-crank grinder. For this piece, the surrounding agate has been carefully ground back to bring out the cross hidden inside.
Untreated and entirely natural, it is a rare find that brings a spiritual element to any jewellery or craft piece.
During a visit to Indonesia we spent a day with Mr "Letterman" himself, watching this true craftsman at work with his own hands. It is this same ageing, skilled craftsman who produces our entire range of Alphabet, Number and religious figure cabochons, each 100% natural and authentic, guaranteed. Each alphabet and number set carries his signature as proof of authenticity. Spotting the image within the stone, whether cross, letter or number, relies entirely on this craftsman's trained eye. This is a chance to own a genuinely rare and one-of-a-kind lapidary piece.
For jewellery makers and collectors of rare, one-of-a-kind items alike, this cross cabochon is a standout addition. Bring natural beauty and religious meaning to your next project with this piece, and check our other listings for full Alphabet and Number sets and other religious symbols cut from this same remarkable gemstone.
