A maroon-red cross runs vertically down the pale grey-white centre of this cabochon, deepening to golden amber where it meets the base of the stone. This letter agate cabochon originates in the rugged mountain ranges of East Java, where craftsmen first identified rough Letter Agate nodules in a remote mountain village and began cutting them to reveal religious scripts hidden within.

Among these craftsmen, one man in particular earned a reputation as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates. In a small dirt-floored cabin lit only by gas lantern, he works a hand-crank grinder to practise this singular craft. For this piece, the surrounding agate was carefully ground back to bring the natural cross into view. Entirely natural and untreated, this cabochon is a rare find that lends a spiritual quality to any piece of jewellery or craft work.

During a visit to Indonesia, we spent a day alongside Mr "Letterman" himself, watching this true craftsman at work. It is this same ageing, skilled craftsman who produces every one of our Alphabet, Number and religious figure cabochons, each 100% natural and authentic, guaranteed. Each alphabet and number set carries his signature as proof of authenticity. Whether the image is a cross, a letter or a number, spotting it within the stone relies entirely on this craftsman's trained eye. Here is a chance to own a rare and thoroughly unique piece of lapidary craft.

For jewelry makers and collectors of one-of-a-kind items alike, this cross cabochon is a worthy addition to any collection.
