Craftsmen in a local mountain village were the ones who first identified this rough material, originally gathering it so that religious script could be carved from the stone.
A single craftsman is credited as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates for the skill he brings to this work. In a small cabin with an earthen floor, working by the light of a gas lantern, he shapes each stone using a hand-operated crank grinder. To bring out the natural Allah symbol held within, the surrounding agate on this piece has been carefully ground away by hand.
