Deep reddish-brown veining traces script-like lines across the honey-tan translucent centre of this cabochon, fading into a paler, opaque cream-tan rim along one edge. It was cut from agate nodules found in the mountains of East Java, where local craftsmen first recognised the rough material and began cutting religious script from it.
 
One craftsman in particular has become known as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates. Working by gas lantern in a small, dirt-floored cabin, using nothing more than a hand-crank grinder, this "Letter Man" carries out his unique craft. Careful grinding away of the surrounding agate on this piece has revealed the natural Allah symbol held within.
