Dark blackish-brown markings gather in a rounded, connected cluster across the centre of this cabochon, set against a pale blue-grey body that warms to cream along its lower edge. This Letter Agate cabochon carries a natural Allah symbol, cut from rough sourced in the rugged mountains of East Java. Villagers in a remote East Java settlement were the first to recognise the rough Letter Agate nodules, and it was there that the stone began to be gathered specifically to cut religious script.
 
One craftsman in particular has earned a reputation as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates. He carves in a small dirt-floored cabin lit only by gas lantern, working the stone with a hand-crank grinder. Careful grinding has removed the surrounding agate to bring out the natural Allah symbol held within this piece.
