Amber cross-arms fade against the pale grey-white body of this cabochon, brightening to a soft cream cloud at the centre before darkening into a deep rust-brown stem toward the base. This piece was cut from rough sourced in the rugged mountains of East Java, where craftsmen in a remote mountain village first recognised the potential of Letter Agate nodules, originally cutting them to bring out religious script.
 
Chief among these craftsmen is a man regarded by many as the "Godfather" of the Letter Agates. He works from a small, dirt-floored cabin lit only by gas lantern, shaping each stone by hand with a crank grinder: this is the "Letter Man" at his craft. For this cabochon, the surrounding agate was carefully ground back to reveal the natural cross held within. Entirely natural and untreated, this piece is genuinely scarce and brings a note of spiritual symbolism to any piece of jewellery or craft work.
